Senior Juvenile paralegal
A Public Defender paralegal interviews the youth, whether in custody at Juvenile Hall or out of custody, prior to the youth’s first court appearance. The public defender paralegal will talk to the youth about the facts of the case and the youth's background. The public defender paralegal is part of the youth’s defense team and everything disclosed during this conversation is confidential.
The paralegal helps the Public Defender Juvenile Division supervisor determine if there is a conflict of interest and the case needs to go the Alternate Defender or Independent Defender Office. The paralegal also conducts a variety of tasks to assist the attorney in representing the youth, including requesting school, medical, and mental health records.
